A holon is both a whole and a part at the same time. It maintains its own integrity and agency, yet it’s also an essential component of a larger system. Take, for instance, a leaf on a tree: it is a complete entity with its own function, but it is also a part of the larger whole of the tree. Similarly, the tree itself is a part of the forest, and the forest a part of the ecosystem, and so on. This fractal-like nature of holons means that each level is a building block of a greater whole while containing smaller parts within itself.
