This session will be quick and dirty speed sketching a portrait per song.
This is a drawing exercise that involves very quickly drawing a person's portrait while listening to a song.
We’re not going for realism or perfection, we’re going for loose and fast, building muscle memory, quick observation and shape recognition skills.
Bonus: This is great for improving overall brain function!
Rules of the game:
Bring your face
Choose a song between between 3-5 min max
We all sketch the person whose song is playing
At the end of the song, we move along and sketch the next person during their song
This means a maximum of 3-5 min per portrait
I recommend using a pen and paper - pencil comes with the temptation to erase and start over. This is goes against the point of the exercice, where we commit to our lines and move on, with no time for erasing or correcting.
Get your reps in, quick and dirty ;)
General Tips for speed sketching
BYOB, noting that a low degree of alcohol can help loosen your lines and flow faster.
Focus on the general shapes and add defining characteristics quickly
Capture the essence of your imagination without getting bogged down in details
Vary line thickness and style
Start with loose lines to refine later
Other tips for sketching (for before the session)
Warm up by drawing lines and circles,
Try drawing from a reference,
Sketch out basic shapes first,
Hold your pen/pencil loosely.
